How do you calculate recipe cost?
Cost each ingredient by comparing the converted quantity used with the quantity purchased, then add those ingredient costs.
Add packaging or another direct batch cost only when it belongs in your definition, then divide by the recipe yield. This calculator keeps labor separate so ingredient economics are not confused with time or payroll cost.

Converting a package into recipe usage
A 10 lb bag of flour costs $12.00. A recipe uses 24 oz, which is 1.5 lb, so flour contributes $1.80. A $4.00 gallon of milk contributes $0.50 when the recipe uses 2 cups.
With a yield of 10, total recipe cost is $3.50 and cost per unit is $0.35. The $1.20 direct-cost amount is visible rather than silently mixed into ingredient cost.
Convert within weight, volume, or count—never between them.
Ounces, pounds, grams, and kilograms convert within weight. Teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, gallons, milliliters, and liters convert within volume. “Each” converts only to “each.”
Converting flour cups to flour ounces would require ingredient density and measurement assumptions. The calculator rejects that combination instead of inventing a density.
Start with the package, then record actual usage.
For every ingredient, enter the package price and package quantity shown by your supplier. Then enter the amount the recipe actually uses and its unit. Add or remove rows until the ingredient list matches the production recipe, and use a realistic finished yield.
Packaging and other direct cost apply to the whole recipe or batch. If labor matters to the decision, calculate it separately and label it clearly rather than placing payroll inside ingredient cost.
Cost per unit is only as reliable as package data and yield.
The ingredient breakdown shows which inputs drive the batch. Recheck supplier prices, trim or cooking yield, portion size, and waste whenever actual production differs from the written recipe. Small discrepancies can become material at higher volume.

Keep in mind
- Volume-to-weight conversion is not performed because density is ingredient-specific.
- Labor, overhead, waste allowances, tax, and desired profit are excluded.
- Cooking loss and trim are reflected only if your entered quantities or yield account for them.
- Supplier prices can change after the recipe is costed.

Does recipe cost include labor?
Not in this calculator. It includes ingredient usage, optional packaging, and another optional direct batch cost. Keeping labor separate makes the scope of recipe cost explicit.
Why can’t the calculator convert cups to ounces?
Cups measure volume and ordinary ounces measure weight. Conversion requires the ingredient’s density, which varies by ingredient and handling. The calculator does not invent that value.
What should I use for recipe yield?
Use the number of finished servings or sellable units the batch actually produces at your standard portion. A theoretical yield that ignores loss will understate cost per unit.
How often should recipes be recosted?
Recost when supplier prices, package sizes, portions, ingredients, or production yield change. The right schedule depends on how volatile your inputs are.
